Rob Tonneberger
Dr. McCoy of Star Trek fame once said, "Engineers, always
changing things". As an engineer, I have not only tried to build better mouse
traps but also tried to improve the way I design the better mouse traps.
Early in my twenty-five year career as an real-time embedded
software engineer, I realized that software was not developed in the same manner
as electronic and mechanical disciplines. Although software development is a
younger branch of engineering, it didn't seem to take advantage of formal
methods familiar to the other branches.
Since the beginning, I have tried to write better software with
each new project. I’ve kept up with my technical journals and read many books on
software engineering. There have been opportunities to mentor junior engineers
and teach others what I’ve learned including teaching at the University of
Saskatchewan.
Quite by accident, I saw the terms PSP and SEI while searching
the web. I remembered a few years ago of an associate relating his experience
with his company’s software process improvement. The name SEI sounded familiar.
A quick search on "PSP SEI" brought me to the SEI web-site. What I found was a
proven methodology that answered my personal need in creating better software. I
immediately registered for the TSP Executive Strategy Seminar. By the end of the
course, I had decided that PSP/TSP offered much more to me than just
methodology, it provided a career opportunity. Then I took the entire series of
classes on PSP and TSP so that I’m now a certified commercial PSP instructor and
TSP launch coach.
My second career now teaches the PSP/TSP methodology to software
engineers and their organizations such that they can develop software on time,
on budget and with virtually zero defects. The SEI has solved the software
industry’s greatest challenge with a better mouse trap.

Rob Tonneberger is a SEI certified Personal Software Process (PSP) Instructor
and Team Software Process (TSP) Coach. Rob provides SEI authorized training and
consulting services to client companies pursing software defect reduction as
well as cost and schedule improvements beyond those obtained only by CMM/CMMI.
He previously has over 25 years of project leadership in software development
for a number of well-known commercial and military-related companies. Rob may be
